Nauticam announces the new NA-V1 Underwater Housing for Nikon V1 Camera

Nauticam proudly announces the NA-V1 housing for Nikon’s new and revolutionary line of mirror-less interchangeable lens cameras.

From the Nikon press release:

The new Nikon 1 system is a completely original concept, engineered specifically to strike the ultimate balance of performance, intuitive simplicity and portability to chronicle life like never before.

Nauticam is once again the leader in the mirror-less interchangeable world for underwater photographers by bringing the first V1 housing to market. With this housing, Nikon shooters will use the V1 to chronicle life under the sea.

Nikon V1

The eagerly awaited Nikon 1 System is in some ways Nikon’s answer to the mirror-less interchangeable lens cameras created by its rivals like the m4/3 and NEX. Nikon takes a slightly different path, focusing on ease of use and responsiveness. The system features a brand new and unique sensor format dubbed “CX” and a corresponding line of new NIKKOR lenses called Nikon 1 Mount. Nikon V1, along with lesser sibling J1, is Nikon’s first camera in this line.

V1 features a 10MP CMOS sensor, with choice of 3:2 or 16:9 aspect ratio, a 3” 921K dot LCD display, XSPEED 3TM dual core processor and a crisp 1440K dot electronic viewfinder (EVF). V1 takes advantage of both an electronic and mechanical shutter system. An optional external flash unit (SB-N5 Speedlight) provides legendary Nikon automatic flash exposure compensation (TTL). Importantly for underwater shooters, the V1 can record RAW mode and offers manual shooting, and manual focus.

The big news for this camera for underwater shooters is the focus system. The camera offers best of both worlds – contrast and phase detection autofocus. Phase detection is the same technique used by SLR cameras to achieve very fast autofocus. Using up to 73 AF points, the autofocus system offers multiple options to achieve impressive autofocus performance, including continuous autofocus tracking. This kind of autofocus performance, combined with the deep depth of field afforded by the CX sensor, mean the end of out of focus shots.

Edward Lai, Nauticam CEO, had this to say about the autofocus performance of the V1 after using it underwater: “What amazed me was the speed and accuracy of the AF system.  Coupled with the small lenses the camera really focused lightning fast.  And the 10 fps with AF between each shot can be extreme useful”.

The Nikon V1 is capable of extremely fast continuous shooting speed; 5fps in normal mode, 10fps or 30fps with electronic shutter and up to 60fps with fixed AF. V1 has an intriguing mode that takes advantage of this high speed shooting called “Smart Photo Selector” that take a burst of photos at an amazing 30fps and then keeps only the sharpest, best 5 shots of that group. Imagine using that for ambient light shooting of fast moving animals or people.

The new NIKKOR 1 System lenses include image stabilization and silent motor for quit autofocus and zoom during movie shooting.

The V1 also shoots 1080p 30fps HD video using the H.264/MPEG4 format. Motion snapshot mode means capturing photos at 60 frames per second. Other modes include slow motion video at up to 1200fps. V1 even allows you to capture a high quality still image while recording 1080p HD video.

Nauticam NA-V1 Housing

Nauticam delivers the new Nauticam NA-V1 housing, incorporating some of the best features of earlier Nauticam offerings. The NA-V1 also features the type of innovations people have come to expect from Nauticam, including a clever patent pending switch to make using both the EVF and the LCD possible. V1 shooters not only can take their new camera along for underwater exploration, but they can do so with the rugged, ergonomic, and stylish Nauticam NA-V1 underwater housing.

This is a very compact and lightweight housing, with all of the key V1 camera controls available from the ergonomic grip sculpted into the side of the housing. A choice of hand strap and left/right handle means the shooter can customize the housing to meet their specific needs.

The same Nauticam patented mini locking port release system used with other Nauticam mid-range housings has been incorporated, allowing easy and secure port changes. Initially, two lenses, the Nikkor VR 10-30mm f/2.5-5.6 and the Nikkor 10mm f/2 are supported. Given the cameras deep depth of field and fast focus, macro shooting is ideal with this setup, and the 10-30mm is supported via the Macro Port 45 (part #36135). Nauticam is now shipping a flip macro close-up lens holder (part #25101) that attaches to the 67mm threads on the Macro Port 45, and is deal for shooting macro with the V1. Zoom is supported on the 10-30mm with an optional zoom gear.

For wide angle, the 10mm lens is supported with a choice of 2 ports, a 3.5” dome (part #36131) and a flat port called N10 Pancake Port (part #36151), which optionally supports use of the FIX UWL-04 Wet Conversion.

The housing body is raised to incorporate the optional external flash unit (SB-N5 Speedlight). By placing the strobe higher above the lens, it is possible to get good results without an external flash – ideal for shooters who want an all-in-one system. An optional snap on diffuser (part #36321) will be offered to facilitate this type of shooting.

The sculpted Nauticam NA-V1 housing fits the V1 camera perfectly – the camera is quickly mounted in the housing via a snap in camera tray, and the housing is securely closed with a locking rotary latch.

Nauticam housings are designed with ergonomics in mind, and this housing puts all of the important controls on the camera within easy reach. The shutter release is sculpted into the housing itself, landing the right index perfectly on the button. A four-way controller with set button is easily reached from the right. Video record and set button are larger and have a concave face, making them easier to distinguish, further adding the ease of use. Zoom is easily accessed from the left side of the housing.

The Nauticam NA-V1 for the Nikon V1 also features an audible and visual leak detector and cold shoe accessory mount.

Locking Rotary Latch

The housing back is sealed with an easy to operate safety clasp. A safety release button must be pressed in order to begin rotating the clasp, eliminating the chance of accidental opening.

Nauticam Build Quality

Only the finest materials and cutting edge manufacturing processes are used to make Nauticam housings.  The housing body is machined from solid aircraft grade aluminum, then hard anodized making it impervious to salt water. The large acrylic LCD window is treated with an anti-reflective, scratch resistant coating.

Optional Rubberized Ergonomic Handles

Nauticam uses a sophisticated over-mold process to produce extremely comfortable rubberized ergonomic handgrips.  The soft feel and ergonomic design make the housing easy to grip and minimize hand fatigue on long dives.  Both single and double handle configurations are available for complete customization, and each handle can be adjusted laterally allowing the user to dial in perfect fit. A hand strap is also available for those wishing an even smaller profile.

Optical Flash Connectors for Inon S-TTL, and Sea & Sea DS-TTL

Reliable automatic flash exposure is available with Nauticam housings and a variety of optically fired flashes.  Inon Z-240, D-2000, S-2000, Sea & Sea YS-110 Alpha, and YS-01 strobes provide automated lighting, precisely reproducing the camera’s onboard flash at a proportionally greater intensity.  This system yields accurate TTL flash performance with no electrical sync cables to flood!

Strobes can be attached to the housing via optional strobe mounting balls on the handles or a single strobe mounting ball point on the housing. The housing also features a cold-shoe mount for even more mounting options.

Nauticam announces the new NA-NEX7 Underwater Housing for the Sony NEX-7

Nauticam NA-NEX7 Housing for Sony NEX-7 WILL BEGIN SHIPPING IN JANUARY.  PRE-ORDER NOW AND RECEIVE FREE EXPEDITED SHIPPING WHEN THEY ARRIVE!  TO PRE-ORDER CLICK HERE

Nauticam proudly announces the NA-NEX7 housing for Sony’s top of the line mirror-less interchangeable lens camera, the Sony Alpha NEX-7. Nauticam’s leadership in the Alpha NEX arena continues as it brings the first NEX-7 underwater housing to market. With DSLR quality imaging and performance packed into a housing that is small enough to take anywhere, NEX-7 is now ready to explore the depths.

Sony NEX-7 Digital Camera

Sony NEX-7 Digital Camera

The Sony Alpha NEX-7 expands the Alpha NEX lineup by adding features and performance worthy of enthusiasts and professionals alike. Specification-wise, the NEX-7 might be closer to Sony’s flagship DSLR, the A77, but the body size is only slightly larger than the NEX-5N.

DPReview.com has this to say about the new Sony NEX-7 camera:

“It’s no stretch to say that, at its best, the NEX-7 offers the finest still image quality of any APS-C camera, bar none.”

“The NEX-7 is, without doubt, something of a technological triumph for Sony.”

“…there’s little doubt that the NEX-7 is one of the most capable cameras around, and in terms of out-and-out image quality it’s probably the best APS-C camera yet, regardless of size.”

“…taken on its own merits the NEX-7 is an exceptional camera, and a worthy winner of our top award.”

“There’s little doubt that the NEX-7 is one of the most exciting cameras of 2011.”

With a new 24 Megapixel CMOS APS-C sized sensor, ultra fast performance, new three dial user interface, built-in flash, magnesium alloy body, 190K dot LCD and stunning 2.4M dot electronic OLED viewfinder (EVF), NEX-7 is a photographic dynamo. Of course the basics are there as well, including RAW shooting, manual exposure, and automatic flash exposure compensation (TTL), even in manual shooting mode.

The camera is packed with additional features, including built-in High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode, sweep panorama, anti-motion blur, articulating LCD, HDMI output, burst mode, custom white balance, Creative Style, Picture Effects, and more. Lens compensation (for chromatic aberration, distortion and vignetting) is built in. Battery life is excellent.

Manual focus is often difficult with non-SLR cameras, but NEX-7 adds a key feature that will allow users of the EVF to fine-tune manual focus. Called “peaking”, it highlights in-focus area of an image in real-time, allowing the shooting significant control over what part of the image is in focus.

The NEX-7 also shoots 1080p 60fps HD video using the AVCHD Progressive format at up to 28Mbps for best quality, or MPEG4 for quick sharing.  Where the NEX-5 and NEX-5N are limited to automatic exposure in video, NEX-7 allows for manual control including changing settings during a shot. Continuous autofocus is available as well, and even the Picture Effects can be active during video shooting.

Thanks to the NEX-7’s fast processor, review is lightning fast with no delay scrolling through multiple photos.

Nauticam NEX-7 Housing for Sony NEX-7

As mentioned when the NEX-5N was released, underwater photographers have long had to choose between the excellent image quality of a DSLR versus the compact size of point and shoot cameras. With the NA-NEX7 housing from Nauticam, that paradigm has now changed, and radically so. With NEX-7, you can expect image quality rivaling any DSLR in a housing that is incredibly small and light – plus fine control over all camera settings.

Nauticam NA-NEX7 Underwater Housing for Sony nEX-7

Nauticam NA-NEX7 Underwater Housing for Sony nEX-7

Building on the success of the Nauticam NA-NEX5 and Nauticam NA-NEX5N housings, the new Nauticam NEX-7 supports all of the new controls on the Sony NEX-7, including the triple command wheels. Not only are all the key controls supported, but they are logically placed and easily reached without moving the hand out of position. The shutter release is sculpted right into the housing such that the hand naturally finds it. A choice of hand strap and left/right handle means the shooter can customize the housing to meet their specific needs.

Where the Nauticam NEX-5 has a simplified user interface, the NEX-7 takes advantage of its 3-dial interface to make manual shooting changes as easy as turning a dial. The housing fully supports the 3-dial interface, and all 3 dials are easily reached with the right thumb. The NEX-7 also adds a programmable focus lock control, prominently placed on the housing right next to the thumb groove.

This housing also features optical correction for the excellent electronic viewfinder (EVF), letting the user dial in critical focus. An easy to reach, patent pending lever lets the user quickly switch between the EVF and the LCD. The housing takes advantage of the NEX-7 tilting LCD display and angles it up at approximately 15º for easier viewing.

The popup flash is controlled with a clever single lever that both pops the flash up and disables it to allow for silhouette shooting. Fiber optic flash is of course supported, as is, optionally, electronic sync cord flash.

The Nauticam NA-NEX7 housing uses the same Nauticam patented locking port release system as in the NEX-5, allowing easy and secure port changes. Ports are available for the major lenses that are useful underwater, including the Sony 18-55mm, 16m pancake, 16mm pancake + FE adapter, and the 16mm pancake + WA adapter, and the new Sony 30mm macro lens.

The Nauticam  NA-600D housing inherits the patented Nauticam port locking system, locking housing latches, comfortable rubberized handles, and innovative ergonomic access to key camera controls.  New features include a multifunction thumb lever for accessing Video Start/Stop and programmable AE Lock button (referred to as “*”), and control extensions moving all of the camera’s controls within reach of the right and left handles.

Unmatched Ergonomics

Nauticam housings are designed with in-water ergonomics in mind, and with NA-600D, Nauticam engineers have again created a system that puts important controls at the fingertips of the user.   Entry-level cameras like T3i are more dependent upon the menu system than higher end models for control changes, making it important to relocate many of the camera’s rear pushbuttons to the right handle.

Shutter Release, ISO, *, Video Start/Stop, AV +/-, and the camera’s front command wheel are all accessible via levers or dials under the right handle.  Pushbuttons on the back of the housing access Focus Area Selector, Quick Control Menu,

White Balance, Autofocus Mode, Drive, Playback, Delete, and Set.  An accessory Zoom Gear Control Knob and pushbuttons for Menu and Info are available from the left handle.

Another innovative ergonomic advancement is Nauticam’s two-stage shutter release lever.  This mechanical lever greatly enhances tactile feel of the half press and full press positions of the shutter release button, allowing precise focus control, and less accidental shutter actuation.

The very successful AV +/- switch is unchanged from 550D.  When shooting in manual exposure mode, this lever assigns the function of the command wheel to shutter speed or f-stop, and when in Av or Tv modes enables exposure compensation.  The lever is large enough to be operated by feel, allowing the photographer to keep their eye in the viewfinder while operating this function and making exposure changes on the fly.  The fingertip ISO lever replaces the 550D ISO paddle, making it easier to change ISO –allowing quick video exposure changes right from the handle.

Nauticam NA-600D Housing and Control Back

Continued Innovation

New, easy to use locking latches eliminate the stainless steel latches used previously.  This new closure method reduces overall size and is easier to operate.  These locking latches are easy to close with minimal hand strength required, and protected from accidental opening by a locking detent.  A lens release button is offered as standard equipment, allowing lens changes while a zoom gear is attached without opening the housing back.

The Nauticam NA-600D housing is the smallest SLR housing in the Nauticam lineup, which should appeal to anyone concerned with the large size of some SLR housings. This housing can still accommodate the same accessories as all other Nauticam housings, allowing use of an extensive line of lenses, ports, port adapters, lens gears, and viewfinders.

Patented Locking Port Release Lever & Locking Extension Rings

Nauticam’s acclaimed Patented Locking Port Release Lever is incorporated into the NA-600D housing.  Lens ports are inserted straight into the Nauticam mount, eliminating the twisting or threading actions that can extrude dry o-rings.  Once seated, the large red port lock lever is engaged, securely locking the port in place.  To remove a lens port, the silver unlock button is pressed, the port lever rotated to the outer position, and the port is pulled straight out of the housing.

Nauticam is pleased to offer the industry’s only locking extension ring system as standard equipment, securely fixing large dome ports even when mounted with an extension ring.

Patented Expanded Viewfinders

Nauticam’s highly acclaimed optional 180º and 45º viewfinders provide a crystal clear life size view of the camera’s optical viewfinder through a diving mask.  The patented external dioptric adjustment allows eye relief to be fine tuned in water.  High quality optics eliminate distortion and keep color fringing to an absolute minimum.  The edge-to-edge, magnified viewfinder image makes confirming fine focus and checking corner composition an absolute breeze.

Port Adapters for Other Housing Lines

Nauticam offers a full range of port adapters allowing existing housing owners to use their current ports.  This greatly reduces the cost of switching to a Nauticam housing, and brings the benefits of Nauticam Innovation to a wide range of underwater photographers!  Port Adapters are available for Aquatica, Ikelite, Inon, Nexus M5, Nexus M6, Sea & Sea NX, Seacam, Subal Version 3, Subal Version 4, and Zillion lens ports.

Optical Flash Connectors for Inon S-TTL, and Sea & Sea DS-TTL

Nauticam NA-600D Underwater Housing for Canon 600D-Rebel T3i (top view)

Reliable automatic flash exposure is available with Nauticam housings and a variety of optically fired flashes.  Inon Z-240, D-2000, S-2000, Sea & Sea YS-110 Alpha, and YS-01 strobes provide automated lighting, precisely reproducing the camera’s onboard flash at a proportionally greater intensity.  This system yields accurate TTL flash performance with no electrical sync cables to flood!  Nikonos, Ikelite, and S6 style flash connectors are available as optional accessories for customers utilizing legacy electrically fired strobe systems.

Rubberized Ergonomic Handles

Nauticam uses a sophisticated over-mold process to produce extremely comfortable rubberized ergonomic handgrips.  Handles are available in two sizes to accommodate customers with different size hands, and spacers are available with the housing for cold water divers.

Proven Construction Materials

Nauticam Housings are machined from a solid block of seawater resistant aluminum alloy, then hard anodized making them impervious to corrosion.  All hardware is marine grade stainless steel.  Acrylic windows protected with a scratch resistant material.

Nauticam Sales Manager Chris Parsons puts the NA-D90 Housing to the test!

Chris Parsons, Nauticam USA Sales Manager has spent some time underwater diving and testing out the new Nauticam NA-D90 Underwater Housing for the Nikon D90 DSLR. Here is Chris’ report!

D90 at Blue Heron

I had a chance to dive a couple of times last week with the Nikon D90 in a Nauticam NA-D90 housing with dual Inon Z-240 strobes fired optically, plus the Nauticam 180 degree External Viewfinder. I’d like to report my impressions and I’m including some images from those two dives.

First and foremost, I loved shooting the housing. I have to admit that it took me a little while to get into the Nikon groove as I am normally a Canon shooter, but once I had everything figured out it felt great. It didn’t take me long to enjoy the TTL despite the fact i’ve been shooting manual for so long.

The viewfinder is awesome… and I think the external adjustment is simply wonderful. There’s nothing more frustrating than starting a dive with your diopter adjusted a little off. Just a quick turn, and it is in focus.  The large, corner to corner viewfinder image makes confirming fine focus easy, and eliminates any question about cutting off important elements of a composition.

The Fiber Optic TTL worked well. Point, pull trigger, and wham, perfectly exposed. The D90 is a little slow to recycle the internal flash sometimes, but having TTL is worth it for me in macro shooting situations. In situations where I needed faster shot to shot times, I tried setting the camera to manual flash out put (C. Fn. e2, choice M) and then to a lower power (1/128th power).  This allowed me to fire the strobes on manual, and I could fire away at about 1 frame per second continuously until the buffer filled up. So really, you kind of get the best of both worlds, TTL and the ability to shoot manual with a quicker recycle time.

I loved the ergonomics. The handles are perfectly sized for my hands, and all the important stuff is in reach. The AE-L/AF-L button is awesome. Thumb on it, finger on shutter – perfect.  This button can be set up a few different ways in the camera’s custom menu.  In its default orientation, the button locks both focus and exposure.  It is absolutely critical to be able to reach this button from the handle without removing your finger from the shutter release, as you’ll use it frequently to stop a macro lens from hunting in low light/low contrast situations.

The shutter release lever is very sensitive, making it easy to feel the half press position for focus.  Both the front and rear command wheels are within an easy reach from the handle, and I was able to learn their position quickly, allowing me to operate them by feel without removing my eye from the viewfinder.

I’ve been very impressed with the feedback cycle to the designers that we have. When we’ve made suggestions to improve these housings after using the pre-production units, Nauticam engineers have done a great job incorporating them into final production models. I have every reason to think this will continue, and that we will continue to refine the design while standing behind our early adopters.

These shots were taken on a couple of dives at Blue Heron Bridge near West Palm Beach, Florida.

Nauticam Underwater Housings releases production images of Canon 7D (NA-7D)

Nauticam is happy to release official images of a production version of the Nauticam NA-7D underwater housing for the Canon 7D Digital SLR. The new NA-7D Nauticam housing for Canon 7D will be shipping the first week of February.

Video enthusiasts will appreciate the special attention given to the video/still photo mode switch and video start/stop button and their convenient proximity to the right grip. Nauticam shooters can switch from still photo to video shooting, and start recording a video clip, without removing their right hand from the handle. No awkward camera shake inducing reaches are required!

Nauticam 7D Camera Control from the Handles

An underwater photographer should not have to remove their hands from the housing handles. With the Nauticam Canon 7d Underwater Housing, every control placement decision made during the design of the housing was based on this principal. Long reaches are an awkward compromise, and this housing requires none!

The Nauticam NA-7d underwater housing allows Fingertip access to Shutter Release, Main Control Dial, Quick Control Dial, AF-ON, Still Photo/Video Mode, Video Start/Stop, Star, AF Point Selection, and Set are all offered from the soft rubber overmolded right grip. AF-On, Still Photo/Video Mode, and Video Start/Stop are operated by ergonomic thumb levers. Star, AF Point Selection, and Set are accessed by “piano key” controls built into the backplate of the housing, and easily reached from the right grip. Shutter release is operated via a sensitive, sculpted lever. The Main Control Dial and Quick Control Dial are accessed by enlarged knurled knobs that allow one finger operation.

All eight control directions and center push are offered by the innovative Nauticam Multi-Selector Joystick Control Pad utilized on the NA-7D underwater housing. The multi-selector is an extremely important control for Canon 7d shooters, allowing quick changes to focus point, camera menu settings, and the quick control menu.

Zoom/Focus knob, Power Switch, and push button operation of Quick Control, Menu, Picture Style, Info, Playback, and Erase are all easily accessed from the left grip. All push buttons are angled toward the handle to provide comfortable access.

Patented Locking Port Release Lever & Locking Extension Rings

Nauticam’s acclaimed Patented Locking Port Release Lever is incorporated into the 7D housing.

Nauticam is pleased to offer the industry’s only locking extension ring system, securely fixing large dome ports even when mounted with an extension ring.
